History Saquarema
The region today componeses the municipality was inhabited by a
Significant prehistoric population, that lived of the hunting and the fishing
And, centuries later, was composed by the great tribe of Tamoios.
The natives dominated coastal area, where today the municipal seat of
Saquarema is located, and they called the laggon of ( Socó- rema ) , that is to
Say flocks of socós ( bird strand abundant in the laggon at that time).
Some people defend that the origin oft he Names is ’socoa-y-rema’ (lake without shells, in
Indigenous language). With the evolution of language, it was renamed Saquarema.
Saquarema Natarally Beautiful
Saquarema is a Brazilian municipality ist he State Of Rio de Janeiro, located is the Baixadas Litorâneas Region, also knwn as the Lake Region, Located 116 KM fron the state capital, Saquarema is known as the National Surfing Capital and the House of Brazilian Volleyball.
It stands out for ist beautiful beaches, lagoons, waterfalls and a great biodiversity.
Culturally, Saquarema has local residents linked tot he lifestyle that involves fishing and crafts.
DISTRICTS
Bacaxá- Located 6 Km from the center. A district known for hosting the Boavista Sport Club, a football team currently competing in the first division of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship.
It i also the main commercial center of Saquarema. It is cut by the famous Rio Bacaxá, main tourist point of the district.
Located 18 Km from the center, It is the third district of Saquarema and the second largest of the municipality.
He is known by Sampaio Corrêia Futebol e Esporte, a soccer team that plays for the second division of the Campeonato Carioca.
With the Santa Luiza Mil and the railroaod that cut through the district in the 60s and 70s, Saquarema was for years the second lagest producer of sugarcane in the state of Rio de janeiro, losing only to the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes.
The sambaqui of the Beirada, registered by the National Historical Patrimony. It is the only open-ar museum in Brasil.
Religion
Belvedere of Cross Hill
Monument located in one of the higest ponts of the city, can be seen fron various angles of the city and was place of pilgrimage of the faithuful to thank the healings and other blessings achieved.
Offers a privileged view of the laggon and of the sea.
Church Of our lady of Nazareth
The parish of Our lady of Nazareth originated in a small chapel where the church was built by Mr.
Manoel Aguiar Moreira and his wife, Ms. Catharina de Lemos, in 1662.
In 1675, this chapel was replaced by a temple of greater proportions. On September 8, the same day
that the image of Our Lady of Lourdes was found, in the year 1630, according to the local story, the
feast of Our Lady of Nazareth is celebrated, attracting a large number of pilgrims to the region.
Gandle Of Nazareth
We have as patroness, Our Lady of Nazareth, sant of the Catholic religion, which is celebrated annually among its devotees, on September 7 and 8, with the realization of the círio de Nazareth.
The procession is considered among Catholics, the oldest ceremonial in Brasil, when thousands of people leave in procession though the Historic Center of the city, taking the historical Image of the patron, found in 1630, in the 17th Century.

The municipality of Saquarema was quite populated in prehistoric times.
Archaeological sites were registered in the municipality, being 18 sambaquis and 6 ceramics. Constitute preservation units of scientific, tourist and landscape importante of universal value.

the adepts of archaeological tourism are attracted to Saquarema by the sambaquis of Manitiba, pontinha and Beirada.
